Online Professional Development for Early Intervention

Session 241 at the The Third Conference of the International Society on Early Intervention
Hilton Hotel in New York City on May 2-5, 2011

This presentation provided an overview of Early Years which is an online professional development program being developed at the University of Kansas. Early Years has the two major components of online courses and onsite mentor coaching. Early Years is grounded in a conceptual framework that emphasizes ongoing reflection on Ethical Guidelines (dignity, family as foundation, and community), Policy Concepts (include names), and Evidence-based Principles and Practices as a foundation for making wise decisions that are individualized for each family and child. Our definition of evidence-based practice is a decision-making process that integrates Ethical Guidelines, Policy Concepts, best available research, policy requirements, and seasoned practitioners' and families' experience-based knowledge in order to make wise individualized decisions that are contextualized to key child, family, and community variables. This presentation demonstrated the operationalization of this definition in a couple of lessons by showing how user-friendly, succinct downloadable documents (e.g., Research Highlights, Policy Advisories, and Experience-based knowledge) and multimedia learning objects (3-4 minute audio/video clips of perspectives of seasoned researchers, policy leaders, practitioners, and families; 3-4 minute video demonstrations of evidence-based practices) are embedded within scaffolded content. Third, this presentation also illustrated state-of-art technology features and the technological process being used for development. Finally, this presentation included our vision of how the courses can be adapted for other states within the United States, as well as for other countries.
