A multitude of uses for switches

A switch is a device that works like an on/off button. A variety of switch models is available, from round discs and mini wands to rotating cylinders and puff/sip models. When connected to any device requiring electricity or batteries (a battery interrupter is also needed), an individual can control the operation of that device by tapping, squeezing, pulling, turning, or sipping and puffing. Using switches within the classroom and home is an easy way to ensure participation in a variety of activities and to allow individuals to have control over their environment.

Tips

1. Single switch devices can be used to generate simple phrases that allow for short communication interactions (social greetings, repetitive lines in a story, or routines with repetitive responses).

2. Single switch devices and adapted keyboard switches can be used to access a variety of adapted computer software programs.

3. Switches can be used for turn-taking during read-alouds or group games and to operate appliances during group activities such as cooking or science experiments.

4. Switches are also available to enhance leisure skills by allowing the operation of radios, CDs, toys, and TVs.

5. Switches can be used to enhance independent living skills as well, so the individual can operate hair dryers, lights, and fans.

6. More advanced switches can be used to assist with feeding, turning pages of a book, or operating a wheelchair.
