Policy Highlights

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA) grants rights to students with disabilities and their parents. Refer to the How Does Disability Fit In? Policy Highlight for information about how IDEA applies to issues of the communication needs of students with cochlear implants as well as a framework for thinking about IDEA in general highlighting the work on Turnbull, Huerta, and Stowe (2007) in Free and Appropriate Public Education. Refer to the full text version of IDEA as well as the Supreme Court decisions of Board of Education v. Rowley (458 U.S. 176 [1982]) that are discussed in  How Does Disability Fit In? Policy Highlight if you would like to "dig deeper" into these issues.

The Court Decision Policy Highlight summarizes the court case, M.M. v. School Board of Miami-Dade County, Florida, which dealt with the issue of appropriate education for a child with a cochlear implant. Follow this web-link for more information about the case.
