Parents who have a young child with a disability may experience many kinds of emotions and emotional needs.  To meet these challenges, there are a wide variety of sources of emotional support.  These Image of two children in wheel chairs and their mothers. Professional-led support resources:


  • A trusted relationship with an early childhood professional

  • Training from professionals on how to manage a child’s needs (for example, behavior challenges)

  • Classes or workshops on how to communicate with professionals

  • Respite care from a trusted person to enable time away

  • Classes or workshops on problem-solving, managing stress, or coping strategies
    Counseling

Parent-led support resources


  • Support from a chosen religious community

  • Help on how to guide other family and friends to help them be more supportive

  • Support group with other parents, siblings, grandparents, etc.

  • On-line chat rooms or discussion list-serves

  • A Parent-to-Parent or other comprehensive formal support organization providing parent to parent peer support via a trained support parent match
