EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING
Parents who have a young child with a disability may experience many kinds of emotions and emotional needs. To meet these challenges, there are a wide variety of sources of emotional support. These
include but certainly are not limited to:
Professional-led support resources:
- A trusted relationship with an early childhood professional
- Training from professionals on how to manage a child’s needs (for example, behavior challenges)
- Classes or workshops on how to communicate with professionals
- Respite care from a trusted person to enable time away
- Classes or workshops on problem-solving, managing stress, or coping strategies
Counseling
Parent-led support resources
- Support from a chosen religious community
- Help on how to guide other family and friends to help them be more supportive
- Support group with other parents, siblings, grandparents, etc.
- On-line chat rooms or discussion list-serves
- A Parent-to-Parent or other comprehensive formal support organization providing parent to parent peer support via a trained support parent match
